As you know, the StepsWeb Course provides a structured literacy progression for your whole school. The Ready to Read lists teach and reinforce the specific vocabulary of the readers themselves and can be assigned to individuals or groups.
Each book has an A list and a B list of words and activities. The A list includes words which are phonically regular and incorporate phonic patterns which are known at that stage. Students may be asked to do spelling activities with this list.
The B list includes high frequency words or those which are not regular or known at that point. Activities for this list concentrate on being able to read these words rather than spelling them.
You can now print off a range of Ready to Read worksheets to use in the classroom! This includes handwriting practice, word searches, cloze exercises, crosswords, flashcards and even games! It’s a great idea to build a bank of Ready to Read flashcards which can be used again and again.
You can access the printables by clicking the 'Printables' button when assigning work. Find out how to assign work to your class below.
With our online printables, there is endless potential to create different games to increase engagement and interactivity! If you don't feel like coming up with any bright ideas, we have already come up with some for you. Check out our instructions for playing the Stargame - an effective and enjoyable game which develops sight vocabulary, decoding skills and vocabulary.
All you need to do is sign into your Educator account on StepsWeb and assign the Ready to Read Phonics Plus wordlists to your students - or even the whole class! You can find out how to do this via our Support Site.
"Eddie had been struggling for several years, despite regular specialist tuition," she says. "Over the lockdown period, he went onto StepsWeb instead and he worked independently through some of the main course. To my amazement, he's made over two years' progress with both reading and spelling - in less than two months. Eddie's teachers were amazed when he went back to school. He's now working through the workbooks and doing really well. It's transformed his attitude to school.”
